About the Project
Vroom Service is one of many projects made during a 3 day game jam organized by the Game Development club at the University of Utah. The theme for the game jam was "Be There In Five".
Being an aspiring game designer and new to the game development, the lead on the project put me in charge of the game design document, a very important part of the game design process. I also helped with some other, smaller parts of the project such as a scene flowchart and the logo.
The group on this project was fairly sizable and I was new to game development so I didn't get as big of a role on this project as I would have liked, but it was a good start to my game development career and taught me some important parts of game development like the game design document.
Game Design Documentation
My main role in this project was the game design document. This was a very good experience for my first major project, as the skills I learned with the game design documentation are continuing to be utilized and improved on to today and the foreseeable future. Game design documents are a crucial part of the game making experience, not only to guide others working on the game but help finalize and iron out the many details in a game.
For this project we used a program called Nuclino. Nuclino visually organizes information through a branching tree with nodes containing specific information about the game on them. This system of organizing information was something that I found to be very helpful. While I don't use Nuclino anymore as I'm not a big fan of the visual style, I used the tree system of organizing my game design document in many of my other projects.
While technically on another document, I also worked on the scene flowchart, to help with those working on the actual game file. This was pretty straightforward but was helpful in learning how scenes worked in my game engine of choice, Unity. It also helped teach me some important practices in game making, and I often throw together scene flowcharts when working on my other projects.
